Hide Yo Men, Hide Yo Husbands, Younique are getting all heteronormative up in here.

Its 2017, and gender stereotyping is still prevalent in the MLM world. Elle looks at a Younique training post where the huns are encouraged to “target the menfolk” to buy Christmas presents for “their little womenfolk”.

 

Thanks to my band of Y-spies, I am always kept up-to-date with current Younique happenings.

This is a public service announcement, what with the Christmas season upon us. At this time of year (and usually Valentine’s Day) the Black Status huns encourage their downlines to turn to the menfolk, when they’ve run out of female victims customers to message. So, protect your men from these MLM predators, ladies! /sarcasm.

Back when I was a #Poonique presenter, all of our ‘training’ from Elite Green Imperial Overlord Tania was fed down to us from the revered Black Status huns. For those not familiar with Y-speak, these particular huns are at the very top of the pyramid.

If you follow me on Facebook, you will have no doubt seen the below post discussed with my followers. The main crux of the message?

After you feel you can not message anymore girls I want you to start messaging any dudes on your FB! [sic] “

Yes, we’ve got heteronormativity, gender assumptions, and patronising all wrapped up in this one delightful little post.

You know the little examples – when society assumes that girls should love pink and play with dolls, and boys should love blue and play football? I didn’t. I hated dolls and played with toy dinosaurs.

My followers were naturally unimpressed.

Most laughed at the idiocy, safe in the knowledge that their partners/husbands/fathers/sons/etc would ignore such a message. Others expressed how disappointed they’d be to receive Younique for Christmas, and had pity for the men that may fall into this trap.

“…Sounds heteronormative but OK…”

Not familiar with the term heteronormativity? It is “the belief that people fall into distinct and complementary genders (male and female) with natural roles in life“, which especially applies in this case.

Besides this follower’s amusing anecdote on how male friends would sound when cold-messaging, the sentiments behind the post are painfully true.

This is why all MLMs target women rather than men, because (as a rule) women (girls) have been raised in a society where it’s seen to be important to be polite, non confrontational and to [respect] their [friends’] feelings…”

“…MLMs prey on women caring for children or family…our society offers very few family friendly roles…”

Another follower picks up on the fact that this post forgets that makeup isn’t just for ‘girls’:

“…They seem to live in a time gone by. ‘Ooooh all women are a tad bit gullible and only like pink and makeup’ and ‘all men [are still] in that caveman stage’. I often see men with incredible makeup on Instagram…” 

There’s also the assumption that all females “wear and love makeup” – this follower doesn’t, and many others too.

One follower also noticed, “…I like how “Mark” gets his actual name, where’s the ‘hey boiiiiii!’?

If you are wondering what this follower means, its a response to the fact that practically all mass-produced MLM spam messages start with “heyyyy gurrrlll!” Well, its a lot more time-consuming to type your victim’s target’s individual name, isn’t it. 😉

That’s a lot of ways to say “heyyyy gurrrlll!” 

So yes, whilst the Black Status uplines encourage their (predominantly female) presenters to address each other with silly pet-names, it is encouraged to address the menfolk with their proper titles. How quaint.

However, the thing I personally despise is the assumption that “messaging men is sooooo different than messaging the girls on your list.”

Says who? I have friends of all genders, and I do not find messaging one any different from the other.

“…[Men] are very DIRECT and will completely shut you off if you try to feed them any fluff…”

Again, SAYS WHO?? Where is the equality?

I am female, and can be extremely direct, and will instantly shut off anyone feeding me “fluff” – who says that trait is exclusive to males? This Black Status hun is a behavioural expert as well as a super Younique peddler, clearly.

Black Status uplines, please remove your heads from your backsides – this is 2017 and we have no time for your gender assumptions. Not all women like makeup or the colour pink. There are men who are stay-at-home-parents and/or choose to wear makeup. These preferences are really not exclusive to any one gender.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for this Black Status training to feed down to all the other downlines across the globe.

Oh please, you cannot be serious with that shit. If I want chocolate, you can bet your arse that I am having chocolate. I don’t need James to “treat” me, nor would I expect him to!

I think that pretty much sums up the message of this article – stereotyping is still very much alive in the MLM world, my friends.

What’s next for Elle Beau?

On reflection, I do feel that I would like to rewrite my Poonique story into a proper novella – whether its an ebook, or if I find someone who would put me in print.  The main reason being, I missed out “the smaller stuff” for the purpose of keeping the reader interested and driving the tale forward.  When I wrote this blog, I wanted to mainly focus on the dodgy tactics I experienced, but on reflection I would like to talk more in-depth about everything I can remember.  

I would like to rewrite my tale with the spreadsheet as more of a prominent reference point – it will also help me recall things in chronological order (i.e. when certain monthly kudos were released, little paltry orders etc).  Mia is still lurking in some of the training groups, and is finding me screenshots to illustrate certain chapters.  So, as well as writing anti-MLM articles, I will be working on producing a full, comprehensive story in the interim.  I hope to set up a Kickstarter for this once I have an idea of costings.

  1. I’m with the commenter who noticed the use of “girls” vs. “men.” I’ve made a point to refer to anyone over the age of 18 “woman.” This type of marketing reminds me why I do.
